Greetings to fine folks around here, new Think Pad user here.
I would like to find out if it is possible to mod R400 into T400 case? What would one need to do that, as I understand R400 is few mm thicker than T400 is and uses thicker ultrabay DVD drive, other than that they are identical build wise?
What if I bought T400 bottom CFRP case, would that be enough to accomodate all the guts of R400 given that it has the same screen assembly as T400?
Long question short - can I replace R400 bottoms cover with T400 bottom cover to make R400 as thin as T400? Only thing left out will be obviously ultrabay dvd writer.
I got an old R400 with cracked bottom cover and its so damn thick that I would like to freshen it up a little bit and shave some milimeters from its height.

I don't know if they're interchangeable. The thing to consider is the mount point for the boards. While you'd think they'd be the same, I would not be surprised at all if they're different. The T60 and R60, though they are practically the same machine and share many parts, the mount points on the motherboard are different and their boards can't be swapped. You might want to post this on ThinkPads.com. I'm sure someone there will know. Personally, I don't think a few mm and ounces is worth the trouble, but good luck nonetheless.

Yeah you would have to look in the hardware maintenance manual for both models and see the mounting points of the boards, holes for IO ports and heatsink fins and all that match up. However, from what I remember the R was more similar to the T than the other thinkpad's like the SL and L so maybe it will match up! But like ZaZ said, the R was only a hair lighter and slimmer.. so it may not be worth the effort.
