My backlight is not working. I bought a new inverter board and installed it. When I booted up the computer the display was illuminated for only one second (or less). Have I just fried my replacement inverter board? Can a defective backlight cause this symptom (and therefore I should try replacing the display)?

How would replacing the inverter fix your backlight? You can do just the bulb on the screen and it's cheaper, but it's a PITA. It's easier to do the whole screen in my opinion. It works hooked up to an external screen?

The inverter card supplies the AC required by the the fluorescent backlight. A used one cost $12. The backlight is, as you say, a PITA to replace. A used display (LCD + backlight + inverter) costs around $60 used, less of a pain to replace, but way more difficult than replacing the inverter card.

Yes, the the graphics card is successfully driving a different display as I type this. The LCD part of my laptop display is working - it is the backlight that is not.

    Thanks for the reply!

Inverters rarely fail. If your backlight has failed it's most likely the bulb, though it's not 100%. I don't find the LCD to be that bad to replace though it does take longer.
