I just bought r50e, and found out that the 40GB hard drive only had 32.7GB. Although there is 4GB for partition service, there is still 3.3GB short. Is this normal? Thanks for your information.

Well, from past experience, all hard drives seem to be a little short of what they are advertised for, so I think it's normal. My 40 GB drive has only 32.6 GB useable.

You have 40GB, it is just consumed by the data in the hidden partition. They may say 4GB, but it might be more like 4.6 or something. Plus the way hard drive manufacturers calculate space is different than how windows does it. Windows goes by the number of bytes ie. 1,000 = 1KB. Drives go by 1024=1KB. So if you divide your hard drive space by 1000 and then multiply by 1024 it should come out pretty close.

    According to my calculations,
    40 * (1000/1024)^3 = 37.25GB
(ie. convert manufacturer's deceptive specs to real specs)

    So something's wrong there..

What is the hidden partition used for? Can you get rid of it?

The hidden partition is used to recover your notebook in the event of a software failure. You can get rid of it as I did with mine.

Does IBM provide a CD/DVD to accomplish the same thing?
(Depending on how much crap IBM puts on there with the default configuration, that may or may not be useful :-> )

IBM doesn't provide the CD's, but you can burn a set pretty easily using IBM's utility. Then, I guess you can safely delete the partition. It of course doesn't provide just the Windows CD, so all the initial software would be installed as well.
