the 256MB is kind of a problem, you'd definitely want to upgrade it to 512MB. Also, it depends on what kind of optical drive you get with this -- is it CDRW or a DVD Multiburner for example? The R51 is a good alternative to the ThinkPad T42 that's a more expensive notebook, but offers lighter weight and better performance options. So basically the R51 is a budget version of the T42. The price you quote here is okay given you get a 3-year warranty, but it's not what I'd call a steal by any means.
