Would someone care to tell me the major differences between the two?

Are the differences really important for the decent home/office/business user?

Is the R50e really a bargain for the budget-minded user?

What configurations and prices are you looking at?

Oh, it is meant to be a general question regarding the R50e line and the major differences between R50e and R51, not relating to specific models.

There are some minor differences. The r51 has the touchpad, supports the port replicator, has the infrared port. I think in base confirguation they are a pretty good value, but when start getting extras, it adds up quickly. What are you planning on doing with it and what is your budget?

    Hi Zazonz

I haven’t taken any concrete decision yet. Just checking a few options, trying to understand what’s going on in this market.

I’m going to use a notebook mainly for academic work (I have a dissertation to write), e-mails, surfing the web etc. Nevertheless I’m looking for a machine that is reliable, ergonomic and not too heavy.

I see the T42 is very popular in this forum – but if I can save some money and still get a good machine, why not?

You might want to wait a little while with all the new machines arriving or coming soon. You may find something better you like or the new ones will drive down the prices on the old ones.
