I tried searching and reading first, but could not find anything for this. I hope this isn't a repost.

I have an R52 1860-U25 with only a CD player. I want to get a combo burner to replace this in the Ultrabay Enhanced. Are there units available from manufacturers other than Lenovo that will fit properly and drop in? Looking for a low price since it's an old machine.

Thanks for any help and suggestions!

    Try eBay.

It's possible that the R series can use other brands (it has a standard height drive), but most ThinkPads require proprietary optical drives due to their slimness and general design.

The R series actually use standard 12.7mm height drives. However, ThinkPads use different connectors, which makes using an off the shelf drive difficult at best. Plus there's the whole bezel not matching issue as well. I'd post a request over in the Marketplace on ThinkPads.com. I'd bet someone over there has one on the cheap. eBay works too, but you'll probably pay more there.
