It would appear that what people say regarding the DVD recorders which comes with various ThinkPad models are indeed, more or less useless.

    Mine says Matsush!ta DVD-RAM UJ-830SX.

I burned 13 dvd,s the other day, 3 of them failed. It burns in 2.4X
I bought two new DVD Movies today, which it was unable to play. Turns out it rejects some 30% of my discs.

What a piece of crap. Is this normal? Any ways of making this drive run better?

My personal advice would be to get the battery for the bay and get an external drive.

You may be able to use a different drive in the R40 depending on the bay. Panasonics are junk drives. I would rather carry and extra few ounces than have one of those.

Well, Panasonic is one of Matsush!ta Electric Industrial Co.'s most well known brands.
