usage: word processing, no intensive video editing or graphics editing or gaming, looking at using for atleast 2 years, probably use an IDE (like visual studio ), also looking to experiment with Linux variant on the laptop

    Intel core 2 duo - 2.0 ghz/ (is 1.8 ghz ok to use? )
    800 Mhz FSB
    2MB L2 cache..
    XP
    1 GB RAM
    widescreen( 15.4 or 15.0 ) w/ camera
    4 USB ports
dvd recordable / CD - RW
    IEEE 1394 port -
Express Card ( Correct me if I am wrong with this - Unless I am in Europe, Smart Card is not that useful )
    WWAN and bluetooth feature
    intel wi-fi link ( is thinkpad's PCI e card better ?)

Are there any serious upgrade problems from vista basic to other editions?

Based on the listed usage, if I am not mistaken I should rather prefer upgrading my RAM if need be compared to the processor ?
(For example, 512MB to 1MB ram instead of an processor upgrade from 1.8Ghz to a 2.0 or 2.2 Ghz.)
or is it the other way around?( bcoz it is a laptop, processor matters and rather not do an upgrade compared to the RAM )

does the price range fall in between $600-$800 after any instant savings discounts?

Has anyone had found issues with the processor upgrade from 1.8 Ghz to 2.2Ghz or RAM upgrades from 512MB to 1GB of the T61 or T60 laptop?

I say go for CPU upgrade first because it's easy to get a good one now versus upgrading it later. RAM is easy to upgrade anytime when you get the funds. That IMO is the best long term solution. People here will disagree though and say the CPU isn't as important because it isn't the bottleneck and that RAM comes first because it allows the best performance increase.

And for goodness sake, amend your posts with the "edit" function. You don't need to post 4 times in a row.
