I am seriously considering buying R61 and only thing thats stopping me is old stories and my experience with R60 where screen was kind of wash out so very difficult to do any photo editing.

So I am looking for feedback on 14.1 screens and can this washout thing be handled through calibration

the screen on my 14.1" R61 is quite good--the same as used in the T61. It's the 1280x800 version... You'd probably want the 1440 version, but I wouldn't worry about washed out colors. That said, I do my photo editing on my desktop as it's got a 17" display.

It really depends on which manufacturer you get as well as the resolution you choose. WXGA seems to be brighter than WXGA+.

drjohn, standalone LCD displays are usually much better quality than laptop panels.

I have the R61, and don't really like the screen.

I'd agree the R60s screen isn't that great, but for what I do it works. If you want a really good screen, pickup a used T60 with the IPS screen either 15" SXGA+ or UXGA. You will not find a better screen for photo editing and the performance difference between it and a R61 is very small if any.

I got such a used IPS ("FlexView") T60 (SXGA+) via the lenovo outlet and have been very pleased with the screen. Easy on the eyes comfortable to work with. Not widescreen, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on your point of view.
