My R61 (14.1) recently started to develop some horizontal lines on the screen. They are very thin (look like one pixel thick) and appear/dissapear depending on the screen angle. They seem to go away when the screen is angled in a more closed position, although and if I move the screen back and forth they will reappear and dissapear.
Is this physical screen issue? Do I need to replace my backlight or something? Or could I be lucky and its just a loose cable?
If I do need to replace the screen, how hard is it and how much does it cost to get a replacement part?

You could try to fix the issue yourself (you can work your way through the parts, until you fix the problem), or you could try to use warranty service to do it (you can extend the warranty on the machine even when your warranty expires, call Lenovo service). -
The machine is about 1.5 years old, and I have upgraded the ram (that wont void me will it?). Its currently OUT of warranty.
can I get an extended warranty still and how much will it cost? Or can I upgrade the screen myself? -
I am not sure how much the warranty costs, you should call Lenovo in your area.
You can google the price of the various parts by checking the parts list.

Oh man thanks that it isn't the GPU problem, these failures seem to be ramping up to go along with the 2.5 year mark figure.

Huh? I have the NVS 140 I think, do those have problems later on in their lifetime?
Is there a manual that I can reference on how exactly to take apart the screen? -
Google G84 g86 fault, you will see sobering truth about your NVS 140M.
My R61 was manufactured in april 2008, and i have G86 rev 2, i wonder if rev 2 is affected by that fault? I googled that and there is no definitive answer if Rev 2 was affected. -

, that is not good at all. Would underclocking the thing help? How many fail?
-
From what i have read on the internets, the issue is the bonding material that was used. Underclocking and running the fan at all times would prolong the life of GPU, but eventually it will fail.
I have the fan on my R61 running all the time, that keeps the system cool albeit noisy. I also underclocked it and disabled all eye candy in Windows 7. The best solution is to sell it. That's what im working on.
