I bought an R61 less than a week ago and so far have been very happy with it. It feels very solidly built and the keyboard is great.

Recently though, an annoying problem has developed. Whenever I try to close the lid, a creaking/scratching type noise comes from the left hinge or LCD ribbon at around about half way closed. It disappears when I close the lid slowly, and becomes louder the faster I close it.

Is this something to worry about?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I believe my T61 used to make this noise as well. I don't recall it being loud though but there was a "snap". I don't hear it anymore so I would guess the noise goes away over time.

The problem still persists. I have narrowed it down to the LCD ribbon housing area. Could it be that the housing is slightly off centre, causing it to grate and making the crunching sound? If it's just a fault with the the housing then it is only an annoyance, what I am worried about is a problem that is affecting the LCD ribbon.

    I would appreciate any insights.

Hi! I have this exact some problem, I was hoping someone might be able to share addition insight. The ribbon cable crackles under the housing as the LCD moves on it's hinges.

I'm guessing I just need to call up Lenovo and have them fix it.

Since this was posted I have called Lenovo and they sent a technician out to fix it.

From what I saw it is the sound of the adhesive that glues the antenna to the back of the screen housing coming away slightly when it is stretched, causing a sound similar to sticky-tape being peeled. It was a minor problem and nothing to worry about really. The fix is fairly invasive for the magnitude of the problem; it involves taking apart the LCD housing (necessitating the breaking of the tabs on the screen bezel thus having to replace it with a new one, which is a tricky job from what it looked like and the bezel will never fit as snugly as it came out of the factory again). Even after the fix mine still makes this sound a little, but at least I know now it isn't stress on the LCD connector ribbon or something.

Thanks for this post --- it has made me decide to live with the noise I am hearing...
