If you need the 570m's extra performance, than yes. Or you could get the 140m on the T61 and some $. Also, if you carry your machine around alot, T61 would be better since it has a top roll cage while the 15.4" R61 doesn't.

If you must have the 15.4" screen and the FX570 then go with the T series.
On the other hand if you can live with the NVS 140M and would consider a 14.1WS format then the R series has the top roll cage and you can save some $$

I think steve_p meant if you are ok with 140m, 14.1" and DO want a roll cage, then the R61 14.1" is the better deal, since it is almost identical to the T61 14.1".

    R61 14.1" has roll cage while R61 15.4" doesn't.

The widescreen R61 seems to be almost identical to the wide screen T61.

If you need GPU performance get the T61p 15.4" widescreen.

If you want a great deal on a great portable notebook get a R61 widescreen IMO.

That seems to make the most sense to me.

Now I am having the same dilemma:

    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9300 (2.5GHz 800MHz 6MBL2)1
    Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium12
    15.4" WSXGA+,Camera,BT
nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, PC Card/ PCIe
    3 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)8
    UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    160GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm4
    CD-RW/DVD-burner
    ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe US/EMEA/LA/ANZ10
    Integrated Bluetooth PAN
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery ( 2.4 Ah )60
    8918: 1Year Express Warranty7

All for 1006.34! And with build in wireless and cam.

    Thinkpad T61
    Intel Core Duo T9300
    Vista Home Premium
    3GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
    HiRes 15.4" LCD (1680 x 1050)
    Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M (128MB)
    160 GB HD
    DVD Recordable Dual Layer
    6-cell battery

    $1,149.97 (price includes tax)

This is with all coupons applied, visa, etc. If the machines are configured so similarly, is there really that much a difference in the performance? I think I could survive without the roll-cage.

Good, cause I already purchased it last night/this morning (I am in Spain right now, having this waiting for me when I get back). I was under the impression it is lighter as well.

Yes, the T61 is an ounce or two lighter than the R61.
