So I'm attending grad school this upcoming fall, and buying a new laptop to replace my aging four-year old laptop. Right now, with coupons, Lenovo is offering the R61 with the following configuration:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.2GHz 800MHz 4MBL2)1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop version 1012
    14.1 WXGA+ TFT
    Intel GMA X3100 GM965 w/ 1394
    1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)8
    UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    100GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm4
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Enhanced5
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG10
    No Bluetooth
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery60
    7732: 1 Year Depot Warranty - Express7
3 year depot 9x5 Next Business Day

The price is $795.39. I'll be adding 2GB or so of RAM, too. I have Vista Ultimate, which I'll put on with Linux. Med school starts in August, and I'd like a few weeks to configure it. So...should I pony up the money now, or save it later in hopes of a lower price? Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'd say that's a fairly low price historically, but who knows. I didn't think they'd go this low. Call them up and see if they'll offer you one of the Penryn CPUs.

ZaZ is right. The Penryn CPU is a better choice especially if you are going to depend a lot on battery power. You can get the memory from an online vendor for much less. As far as doing it now or latter, if you need/want it now just do it, newer and better models are always just around the corner. The prices are very good now and the 14" WS R61 models are just as good as the T61's. You may want to also consider getting a bigger/extra if you are going to be using it unplugged for long periods of time.
