I'm looking to upgrade the CPU on my R61e with the GM965 Intel chip.

Now from some google searches, I have seen that there are a few people who have successfully upgraded to a T7300 CPU. However, I'd prefer better than that. Has anyone upgraded to anything better?

Had a look and it seems the T8300 is the best CPU that the R61 8918A25 ( http://www-604.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/s...686018425096212&productId=4611686018425529542) can be optioned with from new.

the T9500 can be purchased on a T61 6460A48 ( http://www-604.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/s...86018425096212&productId=4611686018425522372). I know the T61 also uses the GM965, so I'm assuming therefore that this would work on the R61 as they probably have the same BIOS and that wouldn't they? and it's 6MB cache, so should be very nice performing!

I'm willing to spend the extra for the best possible. But I really don't want to buy 1 that's not compatible.

What is the current CPU in your R61? It may not be that big of an upgrade if you already have a pretty fast CPU. Also, do the things you do on your laptop warrant buying a new CPU? eg., if all you do is surf the web, then there will be no noticeable difference.

Current CPU is the base model Celeron 1.8.

Sorry, pershaps I should of been a bit clearer in my first post. I'm going to upgrade my CPU to either a T7300 or T8300, unless I can't find a better CPU that I'm sure will work in it. So either way there shall be an upgrade.

I have a T7700 (2.4G) on mine, with no complaints.

I know you can easily get a T7300 on ebay for ~$140 while the T8300 will run you well over $200. The T7300 and the T8300 are close in performance (more cache on one faster clock on the other) while the T8300 will yield ~5-10 minutes more on battery power.
    I upgraded my R61i from a T5250 to a T7300 without any problem http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3126606#post3126606
The price difference on the T8300 is not worth it in my humble opinion.
