Is the 256MB RAM coming with the notebook accessible?

I will be running Photoshop, so which of the following mix is good enough (don't want to waste money on too much memory if not needed):

    1. 256MB + a new 512 MB
    2. 256 MB + a new 1GB
    3. Take out the 256 MB and add two new 512 MB (is that would need both RAM of the same size to run dual channel?)

    Thanks!

Yes both modules need to be the same. There is one slot on the underside of the notebook. The other one is located under the keyboard. The service manual covers how to get access to it. There might be a video on IBM site as well. If all you are doing is light photo editing, adding another 512MB stick should be more than enough.

    Agreed - you'll be fine with 768MB.

I hate when the second slot is under the keyboard...makes upgrading RAM more difficult than it has to be...

Get a 1gb stick of ram. By installing the max, you will not need to upgrade in the future. In another year you can add another 1gb of ram. 1gb of ram is $100 or less at newegg.com PC4200 DD2 533mhz.
