They use whichever they can get. Crucial, Kensington and Corsair are considered to be top brands.

Hynix memory is also a pretty poplar RAM.

All value RAM uses pretty much the same memory. Just get whatever one is the cheapest and comes with a lifetime warranty.

If I only order 1gig in one slot, how sure can I be of getting a compatible stick that allows dual channel. My understanding has been that both sticks had to be the same for dual channel to work. Does this apply to a new t60? Will any "A" grade ram work? What compatibilities do I need to be concerned with? I'd like to have it on the way before my t60 ships, and I won't know what they put in it until then.

The official 1GB SODIMM of Lenovo is this. It has the part number 40Y7734
At $156 it is really expensive and I think it's just a rebrand of this Kingston 1GB SODIMM module which costs $116

That's if you really want to have an identical pair of modules. Alternatively you can just buy value ram for $50 that probably won't make any diffrence.

You should be fine as long as both RAM sticks are identical, meaning the clock speeds are the same.

If you in the US, you shouldn't have any problem getting memory for under 50bucks, infact, check these three places for name-brand affordable memory:

    fry/outpost.com, zipzoomfly, and newegg.com

I saw the prices on those pc5300/5400 drops like crazy over this pass months or so, and we looking at brand name such as Kingston and Corsair.

My t60p is finally on the way. I've been looking at the service manual for where to install the 2nd dimm, I can't tell exactly where it goes. at least one is under the touchpad, is the other one there as well?

Yes, I've seen this, but whats hard to tell is.....Is that the 2nd dimm slot 180 degrees from the one shown being removed? It's not clear.

i found a made for lenovo by micron stick on ebay. i am not sure if that one works but newegg has a restocking fee so you'd pay shipping back and that fee to try it out. the cheapest non ebay memory i found by a generic mfg was around $70 and $90 for a brand name. on ebay you can get this kingston for $70, the guys been relisting the item for a while now:
