I just ordered a new W520 with the minimum 4GB (1 DIMM). I plan to upgrade to 16GB.

I am wondering if I can just buy 12GB from crucial.com and add that to the 4GB that comes with it...or can I not mix them... Thanks!

Yes long as it POSTS and passes several rounds of memtest you should be good to go.

@Tsunade_Hime: What do you mean by POSTS and passing memtests?

he means as long as it starts up and pass the memtest+ test (which you can download from the web). Mixing ram of same speed and specification should be okay, even if they are from different manufacturers.

Use the mem configurators on those sites to find the right ram for your specific laptop and you should be fine.

Except that site shows only 2* 4GB for that model:

    Shouldn't that read 4 slots * 4 GB/ Slot for 16 GB max?

I have 3 sticks in my machine now. One came with it and I added 2 of the 3 I bought.

    Running fine with 12GB.

I have one more stick to add when I feel like getting under the keyboard.

The first 2 extras will go on the bottom of the machine.
