After days of researching, I think I will get the T61 despite all the complaints (although one question: how is the build quality of a HP business class notebook compared to a T61?).

Back on topic. I don't want to spend the extra $165 dollars to upgrade my memory to a 2 GB. I am thinking of buying two of these:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145048

Will they work? Are they inferior (quality) compared to ones in the T61?

Keep in mind I have never built a PC, let alone open a laptop before in my life. How difficult is it to upgrade the memory? I don't want to screw up my brand new lappy just to save some $$.

Can anyone give me instructions on how to change the memory sticks on a T61 specifically?

I have seen some videos in youtube, and upgrading the memory looks fairly simple, however, I want to know the difficulty of upgrading specifically on the T61 since all laptops are built differently (the location of the memory sticks can vary, I think?).

How much memory did you order your laptop with? If you have one Gig you will only need to order an additional one Gig of RAM because there are only 2 slots for RAM in the computer.

I was totally in you shoes until literally 3 days ago when I opened up the computer and installed the RAM for the first time. Any type of RAM will work with your machine, there really isn't any such thing as superior or inferior RAM, as it is a commodity. Just for the record, I ordered that exact same RAM from that very site for the same deal, to install in my T60 and its working like a charm so far.

Here is a link to installation instructions of RAM in the T60(It will be the same for the T61):

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-63959

When you get your computer, go into the ThinkVantage programs and look for access help. Use that application and search "installing memory". You will get a printable page will similar instructions that I gave you a link to.

Seriously, I was just as worried as you before opening up the computer, it is REALLY EASY! Just follow the step by step instructions, and be sure to touch something metal, like a faucet to discharge the static from your body before you touch the RAM. Hope this helps.

Yeah, same here. I was worried more about damaging the computer than putting the RAM in, but it was really easy. You have nothing to worry about, only what your gonna do with all that money you saved by not buying RAM from lenovo!

I just have one suggestion, a couple of friends of mine have made this mistake before: Static Electricity. Before you pull the RAM out of the bag be sure to discharge your body's static electricity by touching something non computer oriented that is metallic such as a stapler or a metal coffee mug. It isn't real likely that you will ruin your RAM because of static electricity but IT CAN HAPPEN! Also, don't wear fuzzy bunny slippers on the shag carpet when you install this. :D

    Thanks!

    The petition? Sarcasm?

Yeah it does get scary coming to this lenovo forum. Before I was 100% about getting a T61...now I am sort of hesitant.

^^ Yeah I know what you mean! That is why new buyers (or people new to Lenovo) are repealed away.
