Can anyone unlock the insydeh20 bios for the y580

The idea behind this is to enable the desktop options
such as enable / disable hyper threading
    Enable and disable cores etc....

i know it is 100% possible
because all insydeh20 bios's can be unlocked

And does anyone know if there is a bios recovery procedure

you may have to wait till lenovo releases a new bios for download.

a handful of people already requested unlocking the y580, but all we have are bios dumps.

new bios has been released on lenovo website.

it doesn't fix anything useful, but at least there is now a .rom file to hack.

Hey Link, where did you find that new BIOS? I can't find it when I visit the drivers page on the Lenovo Support site.

Edit: Okay, I found the link you posted on another site. But are there any release notes accompanying this ROM? And how did you find it anyway? I can't find it through regular Lenovo support channels.

Can't belive lenovo still use whitelist when HP lifted theirs, I believe modded insdye bios tend to semibrick once in a while though.

that's what I'm afraid of, based on the feedback from the HP guys and their unlocked insyde bioses.
While I can disassemble the laptop and take out cmos battery, I just don't want that hassle right now.

that's why I haven't flashed this unlocked bios. I also don't have any compelling reason to flash the unlocked bios, since I don't have any major issues. I only had one complaint- that the video output does not switch automatically to external monitor when you close the lid- but I've gotten used to manual control now.
I don't plan to upgrade anything, so whitelist does not matter to me.

On my old intel laptop, I could overclock with unlocked bios. But these new intel chips don't allow this. That's another reason I don't need an unlocked bios for now

can someone tell me how I can access the cmos /where it is? I flashed the modded BIOS and disabled the igpu but now I have no display t.t.

or, how can I flash an older BIOS via USB? I downloaded the BIOS from the site and put it on the flash drive but can't get it to work

Now why did you go and do that? That's the primary display source. Were you trying to only have the nvidia GPU running? Because that won't work, it's only switched on through Optimus.

Anyway, you'll need to do a BIOS reset. Open up your laptop, find the flat round battery, take it out, wait a few seconds, then put it back in. That should reset it and you should be able to see stuff again.

Be very careful with this modded BIOS. A good rule of thumb: if you don't know what it is, don't change the setting. I flashed that modded BIOS myself, looked at all the settings and decided that I don't need to change anything and then flashed back the 2.06 stock BIOS.

Actually, all I did to fix that was pull up a pic on my phone of the bios settings and blindly changed it back ^_^ And, another big reason I am trying to disable optimus is so that I can other miscellaneous programs that default to integrated graphics (VLC, and other video players, for example) WITHOUT the need of Nvidia Inspector.

if you set the default global graphics to nvidia in control panel, everything runs off gtx, even vlc.
