Thinking about finally pulling the trigger after this recent z series refresh. Which would be better at games? Or any pros/cons between the pair would be great.

Would the X1400 be able to play the new microsoft flight sim x relatively well I wonder

the x1400 will be better at games. The FireGL V5200 is a workstation card, more suited to CAD and other tasks of a similar nature. That is not to say that the FireGL card cannot game, just that it may not be as well supported as the x1400. They are both based around the same core, AFAIK--so they are very similar.
I do not know about your flight sim question, sorry.

    Cheers.

The V5200 will be quite a lot better at games. It is based off the X1600.

People have told me that the v5200 will perform as well as an x1600 (or at least close) if you update the drivers toward the gaming orientation...

This is actually the only reason I didn't buy another IBM when I bought my new laptop. I wanted something with solid gaming performance, but couldn't afford a T60p, and the x1400 didn't have the horsepower I wanted.

The FireGL V5200 is a few times more expensive than a regular gaming card for a reason... When you're not gonna use that card for what it's designed... so it'll be just a waste of money to buy it.

I don't disagree, but they don't make a thinkpad with an x1600 or other good midrange gaming chip. I understand why- they are business notebooks, not gaming, but in the absence of one your only option if you want a thinkpad and want to use it for gaming is the p series with the cad/cam chips.

The problem is that the professional cards differ greatly from the regilar gaming solutions so their gaming performance is a bit questionable, some games may have different kind of problems with them.

Don't expect V5200 to be real substitute of X1600, there are so many "buts" here.
