    Hey everyone,

I'd like to upgrade the ram on my R61. Right now it's got a 1gig 1dimm setup. To be honest, I have no clue as to what kind of ram I need.. I just know I wanna add 2 more gigs. I do know that newegg always has deals on ram. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could guide me in the right direction with some links.

    Thanks,

    -dan

any brand is fine. i've upgraded my T61's system memory with Transcend, G. Skill and Patriot. They all work flawlessly. Try to look for the cheapest price possible on newegg. You get your stuff in 2 days after placing your order: very fast shipping.

    Good luck.

Any PC2-5300/5400 DDR2 667MHz 200-pin SODIMM will do. I recommend you check out the RAM Deals section here on NBR for some bargains.

    Hi,
the RAM module you're gonna add to your ntb should have same specification as the 1GB module you already have there. I recommend you to open ntb, have a look on the module you have there and read the specification - mainly the clock (MHZ) should be the same.
    The difference between memory :
ddr = double data rate - that means the memory cells holding the information is able to send / receive data on both - the rising and falling edge of the clock
ddr2 = is clocked at twice the speed of the memory cells of ddr - it means it can send /receive 4 words per memory cycle
ddr3 = same like ddr2 but difference is the voltage, which is smaller => power consumption saving and i think it has bigger buffer - i'm not too sure about all the ddr3 mem specs, if you need close info, read some tech manuals :)

That looks like a great deal.. but is it true that my laptop wont recognize all 4 gigs? is it still worth getting to have it operate at 3 gigs?

Your laptop will address all 4GBs of RAM if you have a 64-bit operating system. It's not a hardware limitation but rather a software one. It's also good to have that 4GB for when you do upgrade to 64-bit. Also, it's not just 3GB used, it's more like ~3.5GB, which is still more than enough.

I forgot to let you know that the new SP1 update for Vista will show you that you have 4GB installed, but in reality, it's still only using about ~3.2.

Yeah, XP Pro 32-bit doesn't detect all 4GB of RAM. You'll need a 64-bit OS.

you need 2 x 2GB G.Skill 4-4-4-12 modules and nothing else. This is the fastest RAM as of now for laptops. I just ordered same thing from newegg.com for 80 bux + 4 shipping :)

with any 32bit OS except Windows 2003 server, you'll have about 3.2 GB available RAM. For more, install 64bit OS

    Hey everyone,

I received and installed the 4 gigs of ram yesterday (Frys.com shipping was incredibly fast.. ordered wed, received it fri). Everything seems to be working fine, and the speed upgrade is definitely noticeable. Only potential issue that I've noticed is that after I installed the new ram, I noticed that my CPU usage (according to a vista widget) is fluctuating a lot. Before, it would never go beyond 60-70%, but with the new ram, the CPU seems to fluctuate a lot, and even hits 100% sometimes. Is this normal? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
