But I just wanted to say that I love my W500.
It's so poweful, black, sexy (in a nerdy way) and different than a Mac...

Last point is obviously the most important...

I love both my Thinkpads. Where did you get your machine(ex: Outlet, From Lenovo directly, ebay, etc)? Does the keyboard have the flexing problem? I am planning on getting a T500 pretty soon, and the only thing that is keeping me away is the reports of the flexing of the keyboard. I know that Lenovo tried to remedy the problem with extra bracing for the Swiss cheese board they used, but I find that pretty cheesy(pun intended
) I wish they went back to the T61 style keyboard.

Congratulations, glad you're liking it

Amiroquai, I am deeply interested in the W500 ThinkPad.
Would it be ok if I ask you for your thoughts? Impressions? Review?
Heat, screen brightness, case durability, build quality, keyboard flex, and performance?
What are your specs?
Thanks! -
This is my 4th Thinkpad, I'm hooked on those.
Fire Snake, this one has been purchased brand new just like the others I've owned.
I don't find the outlet pricing that attractive, especially when you configure a brand new system on the basic side and upgrade it yourself after.
I got the "Elite Package" W500 but configured it to the lowest I could - lowest capacity battery, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD etc.
Serg,
My current specs are:
Vista business 64, 8GB RAM, 2.8 processor, WUXGA, BT and FP reader, Intel 2nd Gen 80GB SSD and the 160GB 7200RPM HD replacing the optical drive.
I do professional 3D CAD work on it, and it is one of my work tools.
My impressions:
*Disturbingly Fast (SSD makes a big difference), highly adaptable and practical
*well constructed (I love Thinkpads), good heat control.
*the screen could be a little brighter, but for my applications and needs, it's perfectly fine.
The resolution on the WUXGA is great and really helpful in certain programs.
*keyboard flex was originally present but due to a mess up at the lenovo repair center (long story, look up my past posts), it was replaced with a None-Swiss cheese NMB one as a curtesy.
Lenovo has been good, and corrected their errors leaving me with yet another solid performing Thinkpad.
Vista makes me sick but is unfortunately preferable over XP in the 64BIT version, performance should improve when my copy of windows 7 gets here..
Feel free to ask me anything else if you're like.
And yes Jaredy, the last part IS indeed the most important! -
8 gigs of DDR3 ram.... and a very fast CPU.... what more can a nerd like us want.
-
solid state drive... but he already has that. Still waiting on mine.

A fairly recent video showing this guy's opinion on how it is built among other things. -
I got back my T500 from a friend. Oh yeah...
-
Amiroquai, thanks for that.
May I ask you about the performance?
In CAD, as a professional, you most certainly work with complex models, how does the V5700 perform?
And the T9600 you own?
I am looking about the same config, but 4GB of RAM, 8 is overkill, and I am using CATIA and Inventor, and I want to know if the V5700 is capable of going smoothly.
Also, how much battery life you get out of it when in Integrated?
Thanks! -

The most demanding program I use is SolidWorks and I'm very pleased with the performance.
The amount of RAM really gives an edge in the ability to handle multiple features/complex models.
The GPU is great and so is the processor.
I'm not familiar with the programs you are using and don't know how they compare to SolidWorks.
Have yet gotten around to use this laptop on battery power, but I really don't expect much from it on that side...
At least not while running heavy resource consuming programs. but then again pretty much every high performance laptop is like that.
While 8GB RAM may be an overkill for you, I would still recommend you get an SSD for extra boost, it's definitely worth the price.
