I really want to get a 200 Gb 7200 rpm drive in a R61 laptop that I am considering, but Lenovo charges nearly $400 extra for it in Canada. So, I am considering configuring the laptop with the cheapest hard drive available from Lenovo, and buying the 200 Gb 7200 rpm drive online.

I know that physically installing the new drive is easy, but I am not sure about installing the OS (Vista Premium), Thinkpad utilities and drivers, and recreating the partitions (I asume there is a recovery partition). I have never created a hard drive image, does a clean OS install or created partitions. I don't know if Lenovo supplies all the needed drivers and software on CD's, DVD's or online.

The OS would remain the same as original, but the new drive would be larger than the original drive.

So, is this difficult or risky?

The ThinkPad sticky at the top of this forum has a clean install guide for Vista. All the drivers necessary are online at Lenovo's website and in the SWTOOLS folder on your computer.
