After the Clean Boot, not just
    (1) the thinkpad message resulted (see attachment),
    ......but also
    (2) ThinkVantage Access Connections Icon resulted in Systray

Both these were not displaying prior to the Clean Boot

P.S. FYI the reason I ran Clean Boot was because my system was slow, and I thought a Clean Boot was supposed to zero in on processes slowing down system.

Not sure how much help I will be but I will try :)

What type of ThinkPad are you working on and did you happen to use Recovery Discs for your clean boot?

I find that using a 'generic' (or a 'vanilla') installation of Windows works best for me. I refer to this type of installation as 'generic' or 'vanilla' because it does not include extraneous software slipstreamed into the OS by laptop manufacturers via the Recovery Disc method. The vanilla install permits me the choice of which Lenovo programs I choose to install. IMO it seems the less programs installed the faster and snappier the OS will be. The Recovery method IIRC often includes both outdated versions of Lenovo programs and unnecessary ones as well. As far as Lenovo utilities I find a handful quite nice and/or essential for my uses (Power Manager, Hotkeys, Power Management Driver, respective graphics drivers, Bluetooth (if equipped) drivers, Ultranav program, Intel Chipset Support, and Thinkpads Communications Utility). Note that in my experience it seems that a few of the programs are dependent on another (e.g. Lenovo Power Manager and Lenovo Power Manager Driver). IIRC Lenovo Power Manager will not work correctly without the Power Manager Driver (both are on Lenovo Support for download).

My short replies to your 1) and 2).

    1) Navigate to the 'Control Panel' and click on 'Programs and Features.' If you are running an older OS such as XP then go to 'Control Panel,' click on 'Add or Remove Programs.' Is there any indication of 'Power Manager' installed? If not then you will need to go to Lenovo Support followed by entering the 7-digit alphanumeric text (denoted by the label 'Type') found usually on the bottom of your Thinkpad into the field titled 'Quick Path.' A description of the hardware specs of your ThinkPad should then appear. Look to the left side of your screen and note the 'Select Task' header. Click on 'Drivers and Software' and navigate down to 'Power management' and click. You will see various versions of Power Manager based on OS type listed. These are the most recent versions of Power Manager for your ThinkPad. This page is where you will find all the drivers you need for you model type of ThinkPad.

    2) YMMV but I find Windows wireless management fine. I have never relied upon Access Connections for wireless functionality. If that icon bothers you right click on the taskbar>>toolbars>>Access Connections. If that option is not there right click on task bar>>properties>>notification area>>and you should be able to turn off the Access Connections taskbar tool there. I do not have an XP handy so I may not be getting the exact steps correctly

Hope you get things working smoothly soon! Good luck :)

Please check your PM box. Actually when I right click on the icon which states Access Connections, I then have the option to "Remove This Icon" but of what use is that, if it might be there because it's wanting me to access connections?

Perhaps that fact is hogging time?

My thinkpad is R52, with Windows XP Pro.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to install Windows (vanilla or otherwise), and I'd never even attempt to do so.

Honestly, this is a *huge* problem in the given set of circumstances.

You are trying to fix/optimize something that is likely a very old XP install.

Once you've determined whether your hard drive is the actual culprit, we can take this further, but I doubt that we're going to get very far without a clean load of XP.

    Good luck.

    @ajkula66. Agreed.

@Judy Smith. Could you give us a little more information pertaining to your hardware as well e.g. amount of RAM and speed of hard drive? I do not see that information in the thread. It might be possible that you have a minimal amount of RAM coupled with a 4200 rpm 'watching paint dry' hard drive. Also post a screenshot of what programs you have on your XP install. Thanks.

Don't worry about it - it may be thinkvantage and/or Java and/or History stuff that's more than 6 months old. Or else just that my HDD is beginning to fail. I don't have time these days to spend 1/2 my life on figuring out tech glitches. Mind you, the R52 has been good to me, better than any other PC's i've ever had. (also less deadly EMFs than my past high GHz towers.
