I'm setting up a new T61 for my freshman daughter who's heading to college this week. After the clean install, I'm at the point now of diminishing returns as far as time spent researching this forum, outstanding and enlightening as it may be.
Can you recommend Research and Recovery for the purpose of recovering from, say, a virus encountered in random file-sharing intercourse? My daughter doesn't know a Bit from a BitTorrent, but I can imagine that she'll soon find out. Of course, first thing I installed after the clean install was the free copy of McAffee that I get for being a sucker for Comcast.
I checked Acronis but I think it's more than I want to spend. I heard about something in Vista but it may not be part of the Home Premium package that she has.
My reluctance in re-installing the Rescue and Recovery utility is fear that she'll have some more crapware and cpu overhead with little to show for it. Whaddya think?

Well, it's better safe than sorry right?
There's no telling what can happen to the computer, stuff like, say, file-sharing can do some pretty nasty stuff.

Well, just have your daughter do what every daughter did when they went to college. Met a decent computer geek/gamer like me, asked really nice in a sweet voice about why their computer runs so slow, and then nice guy helps her out by cleaning all that crap out.
That said, girls in college have it easy, For every floor there's at least 5 resident computer geeks. Your daughter's not helpless, as she'll soon find out.
And tell her not to use bittorrent period. Music and movies should be bought, not stolen. -
It's like, Geek Squad, except down the hallway.

If she doesn't know anything about computers and something happens, then she is going to need the restore discs. Chances are trying to reformat from the recovery partition, if that is possible, might be outside of her scope of expertise.
Better safe than sorry. You can always clean up the machine for her over a holiday. Be wary of over-friendly computer geeks down the hall -
Ok. Sending the love and props to all you geeks and gamers out there in coed dorms. My daughter is on the way! She'll be looking for you when the T61 starts acting up. BTW, be sure to ask her dad before you start partitioning for the full Ubuntu install!!!
Recommend Rescue & Recovery?
