Hi, I'd like to hear recommendations for removable hard drives. I'm not sure what to look for beside the storage capacity GB. Here are what are available on lenovo web site. Thanks in advance!

(sorry, the title should be " removable HD"--but anyway what's the difference between removable and external/portable???)

Edit: please ignore the part in the parentheses. See below.

Why removable HD in the title?

Removable sound like it goes inside the laptop and is able to be swapped/taken out.

External, I guess is just outside the computer in a box and connected via USB or eSATA or Firewire..

OK, thanks, then I meant portable/external, just as the title says. :) So what factors to look for, besides the capacity?

Make sure the connections are compatible with what you have. Most are usb2 so it shouldn't be a problem. But don't pay extra for one with esata or firewire if you don't have those.

Other than that I would just recommend getting a reliable brand. I like pretty, shiny things, so i got a Lacie Golden Disk

Edit: And don't buy from lenovo, they are overpriced

Just picked up WD 400GB external for $55 and change over at Staples. NewEgg has the same drive for $63 using coupons code EMCHDD10, though you must have an account and subscribe to the newsletter to be able to use the code.

Thanks for sharing. Do any of you know anything about Apricorn brand? It seems to be very lightweight.

the most important thing is that you use "Firewire" connection :) it has more speed rather than USB 2.0 - get a firewire enclosure then add a HDD :)

Regarding Apricorn brand ... I had a external DVD writer of that brand and the quality was just not up to scratch ... broke down after a few weeks, and did not read discs properly etc ... so beware. Better pay a little more and get a good product.
