I may have to replace my Lenovo T61p and was wondering if anyone can recommended a current model that is similar in capability and features? I was considering the W510 model but have seen numerous people posting problems with this particular model.

    Thanks,

    John

The only other machine that I can think of would be something like the w70x but they are a 17 inch beast. The dual core w510 is okay, I would probably wait till next year, as lenovo is going to update some of their thinkpad models.

What's wrong with your current T61p ? I'm still running my T61 with 0 problems (knock on wood lol).

If I were to replace my T61, it would probably be with a W510. (If I could wait another 4-6 months for Lenovo to wait for a new machine; like a W520, etc., then I would just wait until the next refresh which should be happening fairly soon).

People rarely post when everything's going OK, which tends to skew the perspective.

I'm also running a T61p. Will be 3 years this upcoming April. Not a single problem so far. The infamous nvidia chip idles at 57C and hits low 80's daily under load. If it was in a dell, hp, or mac it would have been roasted by now. Not every faulty chip is destined for failure, especially with lenovo's cooling system. :D

T61p -> W510 was a smooth upgrade for me. Missing the 1200p vertical resolution though.

Actually in that case, it's the same difference. Run Chkdsk on it.

That's an easy fix. Why drop $1k+ on a new notebook if your T61 can be easily fixed?

@jcstarman: Have you been running Vista on your T61p? I've seen one case where some virus completely wrecked Vista and the solution was to do a fresh install. I took the opportunity to help the "victim" to upgrade the hard drive and also upgrade to Windows 7.

Even if Vista is not involved, I feel that your problem is similar. I hope you've backed up your personal files recently. Don't give up on the T61p yet. Fix the software. :)

Edit: I've just seen your other post. Vista, indeed.

Everything is ok with my W510. :D

The last few minor issues were resolved with the new BIOS that came out a coulple of weeks ago.

For a T61p replacement, you have a lot of choices. The W510, T510, T410 and T410s are all good choices.

Me too, I'm not having any problems with my W510, except it sometimes wake up from sleep state on its own.

Check "Wake on LAN" option in BIOS (it should be turned off). If it won't help check automatic Windows Updates - it can wake up your system too.
