I"m sure it has been asked but when I searched I got a lot of different answers.

So what is the recommended way to clean dust and dirt off a matte screen?

I don't want to add scratches or have it marred.

    DO NOT use Windex lol
I just use a damp lint free cloth to wipe down the entire machine, including the screen, keyboard, etc.

with a soft cotton cloth dampened with water, wipe gently from top to bottom; to dry, use a dry area of the same cloth, again wiping gently from top to bottom. that's it. in normal conditions, you should never have to do more than that.

Cotton can leave tiny scratches on the screen surface, tissue and other fibers do as well. If you use a Microfiber cloth it wont scratch it.

I have used very soft cotton cloth in this way for 18 years on many many LCD's without anything but excellent results. But I am sorry you have had problems...

The official Lenovo advice includes the following: "Wipe such a stain gently with a dry, lint-free, soft cloth. If the stain remains, moisten the cloth with LCD cleaner...Do not scratch, twist or hit the surface of the LCD screen.
    # To clean, gently wipe the LCD with a dry, lint-free soft cloth." http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4A2P54

The official Dell advice includes the following: "Wipe the LCD screen gently with a soft, dry cloth. If any marks remain, moisten the cloth with LCD cleaner, and then gently stroke the cloth across the display in one direction, moving from the top of the display to the bottom." http://support.ap.dell.com/support/...d=DFCC6A44B2374EF6B398593361662C3B&doclang=en

I normally just use a slightly dampened sheet of kitchen roll and then dry it off with a dry sheet afterwards. I'd never use windex or anything like that which could cloud the coatings.

First, I gently blow air towards the screen to remove dust. Then, I use lens cleaning paper with lens cleaning solution (basically diluted isopropanol). They are pretty cheap if you know how to get them.

I mix isopropyl alcohol with an equal volume of water. Apply to a Bounty paper towel and clean away. I have not had one issue using this process with a myriad of laptops with matte screens. The glossy screens are not friendly to this mixtures as streaking is common, for those I use a damp paper towel followed by a dry one. YMMV!

using isopropyl alcohol at such a high concentration is not recommended.

iKlear works great. You can pick up the travel pack from your local Apple store, and it comes with 15 pre-moistened wipes, and 2 lint-free cloths.
