Are you using a USB CD drive?
Why not insert the 1st recovery disk on the Ultranav drive, power on your Thinkpad, press F12 and choose the name of the drive, typically MATA or something that says optical, dvd-rom, etc.
If you're trying to boot using an external CD, you can do the same thing, pressing F12 upon starting the machine but choosing the appropiate option in the menu that appears.
