My T61 came with Vista Ultimate, crashed so often I decided to install XP on a new ntfs partition.

But then it got impossible to boot in Vista. I decided to restore the factory settings using the recovery partition.... but while restoring I got an error message '%s failed' or something similar.

Now all partitions are missing and I cannot get into recovery mode anymore....

And worst of all, I never made backups of the recovery partition........

Where can I get the recovery CD for the Lenovo T61 for free?

From Lenovo, but you're gonna have to find $45 in cash on the ground for it to be free to you.

Call Lenovo Tech Support (not customer support) and tell them that the restore process produces an error and you cannot recover. They should send you a set of Recovery Discs for free.
