My friend just received his new R40 (M/T 2681-4GU), and I'm going to start fresh and reformat it with XP Professional. The machine was preloaded with XP Pro, and I'm wondering if I can just use the serial # from the bottom of the machine as I reload it, or if that is some kind of OEM only number.

Does anyone have experience with this? The XP cd will be a friends, but I want to use the IBM license # to stay legal. The only reason I'm reformatting is the recovery partion and all the junk that comes on there that I don't need.

    TIA

Yes, you should use the code that came with his machine. The disk used has no bearing on the unlock key.
