I am dealing with a hard drive failure after a month of owning a T61p refurb. I just called tech support to discover something horrifying: refurbished machines take on the previous owners warranty. He told me my warranty had expired in January.

I was under the impression that it came with the standard 1 year warranty. When I purchased from the website it was not clear at all about the fact that it takes on the previous owners warranty. If if that is the case then why isn't the status of the machine's warranty listed in it's product description?

Because of this my problem is billable. Want to guess how much it costs to get them to replace a hard drive? Over $600 US. Absurd. I expected it to be more than it would cost me to go out and buy one, but not THAT much more.

On the refurbished section of their website it states:
"All notebooks are fully tested to original factory specifications and carry a limited Warranty."

I guess Limited Warranty means "whatever the last guy had" and the limitations are that it could be expired.

I'm calling Lenovo sales to complain about the unclarity of this. Not sure what to expect.

    Anyone have thoughts about this?

EDIT: Sales is closed. Guess I will have to talk to them about this tomorrow.

You can change it by urself.A change of HDD won't cost you 600 unless it's made from gold.

I have found Lenovo's outlet sales people to be utterly incompetent with regard to providing information about what they're selling. My recent call to them went something like this:

Lenovo: Thank you for calling Lenovo. How can I help you?

Me: I'm looking at refubished Thinkpad T61s on your website, and I do not see a graphics card listed on many models. Can you tell me if you currently have any T61s with discrete graphics and the SXGA+ screen?

Lenovo: You would need to look at the website, I do not have any more information than what is on there.

Me: Can you provide me with product numbers so I can look up the original parts listing with the serial numbers listed on your site?

Lenovo: I do not have any more information than is on the website. Please keep checking there, the graphics card should be listed.

As you can see, they're either lazy, stupid, or both. How they can not have any information about the products they sell is beyond me. They apparently don't want to sell me a notebook. I bought my current notebook refurbished from Compaq, whose representatives were very helpful in locating for me all the details about what they were selling.

I wish I knew more about their outlet department before I made a purchase. This knowledge would have certainly been a deal breaker.

I don't expect to get much help when calling them, but for my own closure I want to ask them what this limited warranty their outlet section speaks of is, and why it wasn't clearly communicated during the process of my purchase that I would be inheriting the warranty of the previous owner and not getting a new one.

Rambo, I definitely plan on replacing it myself and not using them UNLESS I can somehow persuade them into giving me the standard one year warranty. When I read that it came with a limited warranty, I assumed this was a standard one year warranty with some limitations as to what it covered. An inherited warranty is something altogether different and I believe their website has been completely unclear about this.

Lenovo needs to fire their sales staff if they aren't giving potential customers information. Despite my complete hatred of widescreen displays, I would buy a Dell Latitude E6400 or HP 6910p (or whatever their new model is) over a refurbished 4:3 Lenovo T61p because of the awful job Lenovo does providing information to potential buyers.
