    Hi guys,

    recently, I purchased a Thinkpad X60s...

Now, I face a problem. I would like to reinstall windows on this machine, for two reasons: first, there is so much bloatware that I don't need on this machine, and next (most importantly), I would like to install English Windows, wheras I have local-language Windows now.

I do not have an external DVD drive.

Any ideas how I can reinstall Windows? Also, how do I get the IBM programs again once I do reinstall?

    Thanks.

Well, if you haven't gotten rid of it, there should be a hidden ThinkVantage partition from which you can restore your computer to factory defaults...

Simply press the ThinkVantage button when you computer is starting up (before Windows starts loading). Then, Rescue and Recovery will boot up... you'll see an option to 'Restore to Factory Defaults'.

Apparently the rescue and recovery he's got is localized also. Without writing DVD you will get most important drivers from the lenovo website. But I am not sure if all the thinkvantage stuff etc will be freely available. So if you don't need that than format and install the windows you want, and drivers.

Also they sell R&R DVDs on ebay I guess

You should be the last person to criticize others for starting what you believe to be stupid threads, Mr. T61p.

eskimochaos, would you like some water for that burn :p

In regards to the OP, here is what you are looking for:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=119587

Only issue is that your key probably will just install the same localized version again. Have you tried just changing the settings in the OS itself (in the langauges and such area (cant remember what it is off hand))

Thanks for the replies so far,

the version that is available through the recovery system is of course the localized version. As this is not the MUI version, you cannot change the language...

I tried booting off a USB key, but it always gives me a I/O Error...

I also copied the I386 folder from the Windows CD onto the HDD, and tried running Winnt32.exe... the installation starts ok, but then it says there are missing files, so I aborted install...

Any other ideas? I would like to get this done...

If not, my friend has an external CD/DVD drive, so he will hopefully lend that to me...

for those who want to do a full format and clean install, we have no need for the recovery partition and should just delete it, right?

Well, if you don't think you will ever need to restore anything from a backup or ever reinstall... then, theoretically, yes... I wouldn't suggest it though... it's only 4GB anyway, right?

So I have reinstalled the system...

The only thing is, there is an "Unknown PCI device" in device manager... anyone know what it is so I can install a driver for it?
