I run Windows 7 on almost all systems.

Remote connections (mstsc.exe) on Lenovos seem to want to save power by dimming backgrounds especially on the desktop and when the Lenovo is plugged in. I've been all through the power plans and can't find the ones that turn the dimming off.

The dimming is off now because I have this copy of Explorer full screen, typing the message.

Did do look at the Power Manager software at all? Power Manger is Lenovo software that controls the win7 Power settings. It has different profiles that you can set with different settings for all kinds of different settings. It also has a few Global settings which go across all profiles e.g. what happens when I close the lid, turn off, hibernate, or sleep. On the Power manager profile you use, go to idle timers, that's where the setting for screen dimming and screen turning off are.

Remote connections might be set to disable backgrounds.

Also the dimming would be controlled by the local machine, not the remote. Same for whether or not the background shows up.

Also if everything on the screen is darker, the LCD itself dims. I notice this daily using Backtrack on VirtualBox as the entire display is practically black and when I flip back to Win7, it takes a moment for the LCD to adjust.

A second examination reveals that for the life of me, I cannot find the power manager in memory.

Although a picture of a red battery with a "+" sign is on the task bar, I cannot get that ot any semilance of the power manager activated.

I just found that brightness is indeed controlled by the local machine....in this case the lenovo. I want this brightness control tuned OFF. The power manager was activated but I was trying to do it from the remote and the process did not show up remotely.

How do I activate the power manager to turn it OFF?

    Renee

Local brighness is controlled by normal "front panel" controls. I bet I cant turn that off?

"Remote connections might be set to disable backgrounds."

That was one of the first thing that I enabled on the connecting side which is an older extreme.

"Also the dimming would be controlled by the local machine, not the remote. Same for whether or not the background shows up."

First we have to define that local means the Extreme. The "remote" is the lenovo W-520. Perhaps we should use "serving" as the lenovo.

'Also if everything on the screen is darker, the LCD itself dims. I notice this daily using Backtrack on VirtualBox as the entire display is practically black and when I flip back to Win7, it takes a moment for the LCD to adjust."

The active process, like Explorer does not dim. But the inactive ones do and I find it most irritating, especially when I have the Lenovo, plugged in and on a dock.

I'm having a hard time understanding your messages, so forgive me if this is no help.

    1. windows start button > search for "Power Manager", the icon is a red battery I believe.
    - note: power manager has a basic view, and an advanced view. I can't remember which you should be using as I'm not at my Thinkpad right now. You might be fine with either, or you might have to choose advanced.
    2. On the left are your power manager profiles. You can set up each profile with different settings. Click the profile you currently use, go to idle timers. There you should see the timers for dim screen, turn off screen, hibernate, etc. Edit the idle timers to the settings you want. You can choose "never" so that dim screen is never activated.

    A few words.

I found and fixed the problem. On any of my systems I do not use the standard screen. I use Vista Start Menu, a good commercial product but it"s not what most people use. I been using Vista Start Menu for quite a while because I really dislike the non-technical looks of the Windows Screen.

The problem was in the Lenovo power Management system not showing up on the remote system. It was quite apparent but I had to be on the lenono to see it. Once that hundle has changed. I was fine.

    Thanks for you help. Gnomey.
