The configuration of the C and D drives when I purchased the Lenovo notebook were C = 29gb D = 187gb. I am almost out of room on the C drive and would like to resize both. If this isn't practical then should I be moving installation of sofware to D drive?

You can install to d: if you want to or use a partition software to resize it.

use gparted and add some size to the C drive. only keep as much storage on D as you will need.

You could also resize the partitions without losing data using something like Partition Magic.
