Replacing x220 TN screen with IPS

Hello, this is my 1st post in this forums, i have been reading them for a while

now to the topic

I have a x220 with the TN panel im seriously thinking about replacing it with this

which acording to my research in this forum and google, seems to be the IPS display that lenovo calls "Premium" in their website (unless im mistaken), my question would be

Has anyone actually done this?

The Type of my x220 is the 4291-C76 i have been trying to find info about its compatibility but so far i have found nothing

 

It's been done, but keep in mind after doing so your warranty will be suspect if you care. Selling your X220 and getting the one you want is another option.

 

To clarify what ZaZ said:

The panel isn't a CRU. So while ideally replacement will only void the warranty of the non-CRU parts that have been removed/replaced/modified during the panel swap, if Lenovo sees anything amiss that is attributable to your replacement you might well find the rest of your warranty voided.

 

I've done this for my X220i 4290-W1A.

I tried to save some money by buying the TN version, but once I saw the screen I knew it had to go.

Buying the IPS cost me at least 100euros less than if I had tried to trade the X220 for the IPS model.

Bought the IPS from a Chinese dealer through eBay (had good feedback on previous sales of the item).

The installation took a while, and it wasn't easy. I had upgraded a netbook's screen previously, so I knew what I was getting myself into.

The hardest part was remembering how to snake the wifi wires, under this component, but over this other piece, etc., so the keyboard would seat properly.

Doing it over again I would take pictures during the tear-down part so I could remove any trial-and-error from the reconstruction. (The Service Manual illustrations could have been more helpful than they were.)

Since I haven't yet had to make use of my warrantees on previous notebooks, and I tested the X220's stability for a few weeks before installing the new screen, it seemed a reasonable risk to take to void the warranty. (Watch, I'll be back here in a few weeks complaining about my broken warranty... Isn't that just how it always happens?)

I keep the original display in the X220's box, so if I need to resell, I can give it to the new owner, or whatever.

The IPS display is my favorite; it is worth the money to buy the IPS version from Lenovo. If you absolutely can't afford to do the swap, or you just don't care about the warranty, then upgrading to IPS manually will only take up one afternoon.

 

Well i forgot to mention that i dont have warranty left, but still the other question is in the air,

how to know exactly if that panel its fully compatible with my model?

 

Look for this part number:

LP125WH2-(SL)(B1)

The Amazon reseller's item you linked has the correct part number. But you can try to verify that it is the correct item by seeing if there is good customer feedback for that item from that seller. Or, better yet, contact the reseller and ask for a photo of the back of the IPS, to see the part number yourself.

 

The one below is the one you want, screen with FRU 04W3462. Not all LP125WH2-(SL)(B1) are the same. 93P5673 is the original part that had issues with ghosting and was subsequently fixed in 04W3462.

well thanks i was just reading about the ghosting problems in the IPS screens, but still after checking the eBay one, how can i be completely sure this panel is Fully compatible with my x220 (4291-C76) since the only evidence i have of it being compatible is what i have been reading in these forums, from the info gathered in this thread apparently i narrow my choices to

04W3462 vs. LP125WH2-(SL) (B1)

Vinunero, you say that the LP125WH2 it’s not the same could you be a little more specific?,

Also why is the 04W3462 more expensive that the one LP125WH2 even though its supposed to have the same technical specs?

And what are the chances of the LP125WH2-(SL) (B1) having ghosting problems that everybody complains about?

 

I ordered the first day and I have yet to see the ghosting issue. I think it's a bit overblown.

The revised panel is probably more in demand, which is why it commands a premium.

Also looking into buying a new screen. I bought my 220 the day it came out and the TN has been ok, but a disappointment to ISP.

I'm not sure how I can figure out what screen is compatible with mine, can anyone help?

Aha! So that's why I don't have ghosting issues with my new screen. Awesome. Glad it broke in warranty! The extension has now paid for itself

 

Hi! I have exactly the same question, but for the Tablet version of X220 laptop (with multitouch). There are plenty of TN and IPS replacement screens both
on Amazon and ebay. The seller replied that I can't replace non-IPS by IPS, but I don't believe in this.
Does anyone have any experience?

All tablet screens are IPS on X220 generation...nothing to replace there...
