    Hi,

I started creating the R & R discs. For the first DVD, the system prompted me to label it as "Rescue and Recovery - Startup Disc", and the next DVD as RC1 or something similar. Next, the application prompted me to enter a third blank DVD to continue.

But then I ran out of blank DVDs!! ... :-(

So I cancelled the prompts and the whole backup was cancelled.

My question: Can I start all over again? This time with a 25-pack DVD-R just to be sure!!

Even if I choose not do the whole process again, can I restore my R61 to its factory state using only the first DVD disc ... i.e. "Rescue and Recovery - Startup Disc"?

    Thanks in advance

Worst that will happen is it won't work so you might as well give it a try.

am i correct in saying that you WON"T need recovery discs to do a factory fresh install, just the hidden partition correct?

As long as there's not a hardware malfunction, the recovery partition will allow you to restore your system without the disc. If you want to upgrade your drive or it fails for some reason, you'll need the discs.

I did the R&R disc creation process from sratch again. The process completed sucessfully.

    No problems at all. :)

But the software consumed 1 CD (startup boot media) and 3 DVDs (1c, 2c, Final C) spanning close to 3.5 hours to complete the process!!

    Is this normal?

Also what the hell did it write in those 3 DVDs amounting to almost 14.1 GB!!!!

My R61 came loaded with Vista Business and hardly had any personal data/apps on C drive as its a swanky new laptop purchased just a week ago!!

Afterthought: Does MS Vista Business OS + Microsoft Office 2007 really take up 14 GB of space on the hard drive?

    Thanks,

Are you getting 14.1GB by adding up the space the discs can carry? I don't think that should be the way to go about it. Try this instead: add the maximum space allowed for the CD and the first two DVDs. Now put in the third DVD and see how much space on it is taken up and add that to it.

I think it should come out to 9GB at most, which I believe is a normal restore partition size.

I'm trying to restore my T61P also. I got the missing convert.cmd

The weird thing is, my hidden partition is still there. I rebooted and press the blue button but there are no option for R&R!

    Can someone explain?

Hiya ssray23, fellow dubai dweller here :)

When I burnt my discs, it took around 2 hours to complete but I am using XP Pro. I am assuming that Vista should take up more space so it took more time. Plus they will store all the Lenovo loaded apps that come with the laptop  Also, what was the rated speed of the DVD's?

Arkit3kt -- You are right. I just did the maths as 4.6 GB x 3 DVDs and raised hell. I will get back on this after I check the actula GBs written to the DVD discs ...

GoodtooGo -- Nice to know that you too are from Dubai .. Mercury is soaring here like anything .. u'll agree .. :-(

Anyways ... the rated speed on DVDs (Sony DVDs) were 4x.

    Thanks,

Hehe, yeah things are starting to burn up here :)

One of the reasons that it could have taken you so long is that the rated speed is only 4x. When I burnt my recovery discs (which interestingly are also Sony), their rated speed was 16x. The Lenovo drive is capable of burning at higher speed and probably that is why it took you so long. As long as the DVD's are working, its all good!

    Right said GoodtoGo ...

When I bought these DVDs from my local supermarket, I overlooked that the speed was just 4x.

Anyways .. what's more important is that it should rescue the laptop during a failure ...
