I tried to create a set of rescue and recovery media disks tonight on my brand new T61. I followed the directions posted elsewhere around here.

Thinkvantage (click) Create Rescue and recovery Media (click) select Create a set of Product recovery disks Now (check) OK (click) Finds the DVDram drive.

    "Insert a blank disk" (alrighty)
I stick in a CDR for the first disk, it burns that one and pops it out telling me to label it "Startup recovery Disk" (ok, gotcha) I click on "OK" to move on presumably to burning a DVD and the program goes away leaving me with the one burned CDR with about 600 meg of stuff in folders.

The Vista Complete PC Backup deal took four DVD's!!

ALso, it' supposed to say that I've already created a set of media if I open the program again and, no I can go right ahead and burn another Startup Disk over and over.

    Anyone know what's up?

When I created recovery disks on a T60 with Vista Business it took one CD and one DVD+R, and apparently that's normal for this OS.

    Hi

I have also made the recovery DVDs (I used DVDs) and I got 3 in all (T61p with Vista Ultimate). 1 start disk DVD and 2 DVDs with data (Windows installation and Lenovo drivers/software).

So I guess you have to try again because you should get more than more one disk out of it! (3 for me)

I had called Lenovo (actually IBM) after I burned the CD startup recovery and just the one DVD, because I had read somewhere to expect 3 disks and was concerned. The person I spoke to (on Tuesday I think) said that 2 disks total was normal, but XP requires more, which surprised me. Now I'm wondering again. Could it be the diff between Vista Business vs Vista Ultimate?

When I burned the recovery disks, I can't remember what path I used to get there, could that make a difference?

Also, I haven't yet backed up "SW tools" (can't remember exactly what it's called) that another thread suggested should be backed up. Maybe that's the difference? Sorry for the fuzzy memory. I just know for sure that I have 2 disks (one CD, one DVD), it said it completed successfully, and the person at IBM support said that is ok. ???????

You should have at least 2 disks. If not, something went wrong.

I too had only one disc created and followed the same procedure as OP. Didn't want to waste time, so I just formatted my drive and got XP Pro installed.

I didn't make them at all. I just copied the swtools folder and did a clean install.

The one disk that you got was the Rescue and Recovery disk. Now you have to make a set of Product Recovery disks. Open the Create Rescue application again. There is a section where you select making the Product Recovery disks by clicking on an empty circle to put a dot therein. I had the same problem as you today and the process described worked for me.

Well here was the deal, I DID check the circle to make "Recovery Media" each time. I managed to create three startup disks. All identical.

On the fourth try (yeah, I'm anal), after I labeled my fourth CD "Startup Disk" and clicked "OK", held my breath and got another window asking for another disk. I used a DVD for the "Product Recovery Disk 1". It cranked out one more before telling me I was done.

Sooo, all that to say, I dunno what happened but it decided to work.

So you ended up with three. Startup and two recovery.

Stallen, you said we should end up with at least 2 disks, does that mean two recovery plus one startup disk, or 2 total (1 startup + 1 recover)?

Typically it is 2 or 3 total.

Complete PC does like zero compression to the .vhd it creates.

I got one 'Start Recovery Disk' and two 'Product Recovery Disks'. I used DVDs as the required disk capacity wasn't specified. Seemed pretty straightforward once I found the file (impossible from reading the manual, but pretty obvious once I learned my way around the machine and read this forum for a couple of days!)

    Hi,

I started creating the R & R discs. For the first DVD, the system prompted me to label it as "Rescue and Recovery - Startup Disc", and the next DVD as RC1 or something similar. The application prompted me to enter a third blank DVD.

But then I ran out of blank DVDs!! ... :-(

So I cancelled the prompts and the whole backup was cancelled.

My question: Can I start all over again? This time with a 25-pack DVD-R just to be sure!!

Even if I chose not do the whole process again, can I restore my R61 to its factory state using only the first DVD disc ... i.e. "Rescue and Recovery - Startup Disc"?

    Thanks in advance
