I replaced my T61HD with the same 100gb 7200 rpm that IBM sent me when i complained about noise. I used the rescue and recovery program to make 4DVD's and i restored them on the new drive.. To my suprise I gaied many GB.. I had 40GB Free before now I show 67.4 GB free of 92.4GB

    Thats a big improvement.

I bet your old drive had a backup or 2. You may find some of your space disappearing if your new system does a backup.

I dont know...just comign up with any possibilities I can think of ;)

One person did just post and suggest they had some sort of WAUGRADE folder or something with like 3 GB in it that may just be the vista install media or something. Perhaps the restore just doesnt restore this stuff specifically?

Actually this has been an ongoing problem on this forum. There is a program bundled with the preload that makes a backup of your entire hard drive. So if you have 20gig used on your hard drive and it makes a backup, it takes almost another 20gig to do it. You get to it by accessing your hidden partition ( I think by the blue button or under start>programs>thinkvantage>??? something like that). There will be an option to change the settings of the backup utility, and also to delete backups. The default is to make 2 backups, but you can set it to more or less. The actual backups are hidden, or else you would be making backups of your backups.

The other thing is Restore Points and Shadow Copies. On my 200GB drive, I freed up 22GB the other day by deleting all but the most current restore point . Windows Vista will use 15% of your drive for these functions unless you run some command line utilities to alter the limits (not terribly friendly like XP was).

i see how these backups can free used space, but i also gained total space.. FYI the new segate drives makes all those same sounds, its just amazing how annoying it can be once you tune in a certian sound.. I am going to ask them from another brand of HD alltogether if they have it..

Segate is the only hd i have had fail on me in my lifetime, i dont trust it with all that strange noise comming from them.
