    Hey guys,
I'm trying to resurrect this T30 from its grave to give to my little brother.
It turns on with Backlight etc, but the screen is black.
Last time I turned it on was when it said FAN ERROR then nothing else came up.
I bought a fan assembly, will that fix it?

I also think this T30 has a problem not recognizing one of the RAM slots. Is that a fix?

    Thanks

Does it get really hot? Try placing it in the fridge for a few mins, since these used very hot hot hot Pentium 4's and your fan isn't working, i wouldn't be surprised if heat's doing it.

No it's not hot. It's from a complete "cold" boot.
I don't have RAM or an HDD in there right now, not even beeps.

i ordered 1gb ram, a key i was missing, wifi card (yes t30 compatible), and a fan assembly.
    i hope that fixes it.

Have you tried hooking it up to a monitor to at least see if you can get a picture that way? I also think I may have read somewhere that CPU's can heat up extremely fast and since you have a PIV I'm thinking it goes from 32 degrees Celsius to 90+ extremely fast. As a preventative measure the laptop would shut down.

The T30 suffered from a design flaw where SODIMM socket #2 would stop working. Where I work, I've had a few T30's show this problem. The official fix is to replace the systemboard unfortunately. IBM had been replacing the T30 systemboards for a while, but they're no longer doing so.

Here's more info on the problem:

There IS a way to fix it, but unless you have experience in soldering, it's not for the novice:

don't worry about the broken ram slot, there is no easy fix that you can do.

ok. that's fine. 1gb of ram is plenty for my little brother.
I gues i have to wait and see if the heatsink fixes it.

I have no RAM in here right now, but I replaced the heatsink.
There is nothing, not even backlight turns on.

no sound or anything, but when i press hte power button, 4 green lights flash (1, A, 2 arrows, and a N) then only the N in a circle symbol is lit up... what does this mean?

Is there anyway I can diagnose without RAM?

the cpu fan doesnt spin when i turn it on. but the GPU/GPU RAM is warm.
