It is meant to excite people who miss the IBM typing experience (I do so miss it)

I need this in my life. Please make it with a Danish keyboard! Though if they don't make a quad-core model then I don't have much use for it other than to please my love for older ThinkPads
-
-
as long as it has the old keyboard design I will be happy, VERY HAPPY. That big delete key is just LOVE... Though I probably won't buy it unless I can get a 7700HQ or something like that.
-
Ah man gonna snag 2 of these. 1 For the dad and 1 for myself.
I hope there is a version with a high res display.don_svetlio likes this. -
what's the spec tho
-
Doesnt matter much, till the time its a decent i7 it will do. But im guessing more low end ones will be with i5's and 1 or 2 with the i7 's.don_svetlio likes this.

If it has at least 28W processor + IRIS 650 in ~3.5lbs I would be happy and get rid of my Vaio Z Flip to make room for it.
If comes full 48W i7 and dedicated graphics, I would be elated
Unfortunately I suspect it will come with "ultrabook" specs 15W glorified Netbook/ Typing machine, which isn't enough for me
. As far as I am aware, not a single Lenovo product has IRIS in their ULV lineup, and only have 3 models of laptop with full powered CPU (T, P, and Legion)
-

Actually, their ThinkPads are mostly using cTDP-up and the ULVs are set to 25W for the package. It makes quite the difference in certain applications.ThatOldGuy likes this. -

Cool, didn't know that.
But that doesn't help graphics much, which is where 28W + IRIS would be handy. I am surprised they never went for it considering what you said (only 3W higher). They go through all that trouble to put Nvida 940XM in as their top non workstation card when it is only ~5 - 10% faster, harder to cool, and worse on battery.
I'd be annoyed if the decided to put the Nvida 940XM or Nvida 1030 in there as opposed to IRIS. If going dedicated go 1050 or higher is a must -

I can sort of understand it, though. If you look at gaming only, sure, the 940MX is on par with mobile Iris (well, maybe 10% faster but whatever).
Now, for CUDA acceleration or anything requiring actual drivers (cause Intel's drivers are BY FAR the worst I have EVER dealt with) - the 940MX makes a LOT of sense. Check rendering with Blender, for example. I wouldn't trust the Iris graphics with any larger projects. In addition, the Iris iGPU, even at 28W, still results in some CPU downclocking when both are under load.Jarhead, ibmthink, huntnyc and 1 other person like this. -
ah I see, so only for looks then?
how cool is it under load? -
don_svetlio In the Pipe, Five by Five.
Depends on the load and model. Most of them don't overheat or TT, though. -
Nope as a netbook / travel laptop etc.
-
as long as it has a old 7 row keyboard and magnesium rollcage as strong as W500 it will be great, buy to be honest, the red, green and blue at PAD are ridicolous anyway.

RGB - doing it old school
-
and much more classy than any AW or MSI RGB laptop
-

Eeeh, I personally like AW. If you turn off the lights, they look very nice. MSI - not so much. -
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
Even MSI is tame when you look at Acer Predator. -
don_svetlio In the Pipe, Five by Five.
Lol, true that. -
AW is too gamery for me
-

Once you turn off the RGB - it's a very muted and premium device

I wouldn't call that muted, the design itself is too gamery for me
-
Ha ! Lenovo / Thinkpad will never turn out a device as ... poor looking as that. That is horrendous. Black box + solid build + proper keyboard + trackpoint + decent screen (innovation over classic Thinkads) + whatever's up-to-date in CPU, that'll be wonderful.

Forgot about screen
They have to use 4:3 or it isn't a classic thinkpad.
Which leaves the choice of 12.5" screens produced for MS Surface lines (very good screens but limit the size too much) and I think there is a 14" 4:3 out there somewhere but I not positive. If they have their own 4:3 screen made, it will raise the price quite a bit. -
or another line of 16:10 will be super great also
-
hahah yeah right, a black little bit bulky with 1920X1200 screen LED, and full magnesium top and bottom frame with powerfull processor dan GPU, and every single parts in it are upgradeable is more than enough for a New Classic ThinkPad i guess..
-
I don;t mind too much about it being 4:3, I'm currently using a 14" 16:10, and that's fine. Quite like the idea of a 13.5" 3:2 (MS Surface), as keeping the machine small would be nice (for my preference).
-
I'm looking forward to this, I hope we get more details soon.
-
All BGA and now I'm sad.
-
I am already drooling over the keyboard layout

I didn't pay much attention to the CPU specifications, but how do you think if Retro Thinkpad us AMD CPU?
https://udn.com/news/story/7087/2674246 -
Personally, I've actually had pretty darn bad experiences with AMD and ACER products, then again. That's when I went to Walmart and bought the cheapest laptop/desktop.
I always had overheating issues with both companies. I hope they do use good cores, and I do hope that AMD improved over time. -
Allegedly based on the T470. Hmmm.

Are these already out! ? Or is that a review unit?
Looks dope. -

*sigh*

If it's 'just' a T470 with a proper keyboard and status lights, that'll be (useful but) slightly disappointing ?
Just noticed that the T470 has absolutely massive bezel space around the display as well, wish they could tighten that up a little and make the system a little more compact and slick.ThatOldGuy and huntnyc like this. -

Retro & T470 Comparison
Looks like a "work" laptop, went through a number of those over a long time... not something I would want for myself... but I can understand the appeal.Last edited: Sep 14, 2017ThatOldGuy likes this. -

Disappointing that they did not bring back 4:3
probably ulv internals too.
nothing but a "typer" in that case... which they already have a great one in the X1 Carbon -
T470 is ULV only, yes.
Although the mb has a bga provision for a dgpu according to nbc...hmscott and ThatOldGuy like this. -
Hmm, still not sure. Thought it was disappointing, but then putting it alongside the T470 makes it look a lot better. Just don't put it next to David Hill's original concept which tightens and cleans up the design some more (and has some status lights !). So still not sure / slightly disappointed, but it's better than a T470. Guess we wait for better pictures and specs.
P.S. For some reason I have an irrational dislike of the "Anniversary Edition <plus red smudge, "25" ?>" bit being above the keyboard. Small detail, but wish it wasn't there.hmscott likes this. -
This is pretty disappointing. I could have dealt with a 16:10 screen, but 16:9 is terrible. Looks like I'll have to wait to see what Google does with the next Chromebook Pixel.
