I've got an R31 to fix to format from a friend. the computer worked with Windows XP with no problems at all so far.

I've tried to run the installtino from a CD and it got stuck. I've thought maybe the CD or something else is wrong, but still no good.

    Run memtest everthing OK.

    what else can I check?

I'm planning to try and install windows from LAN to avoid any problem with CD's and the CD drive.

With an older laptop, I would always recommend making sure that the hard drive is functioning properly.

Even if basic functions are working, try running PC Doctor 5 to see if the hard drive has any bad sectors, etc.

Ya make sure the hard drive is good via diagnostics. You can burn a downloadable ISO of PC Doctor via Lenovo support site. Also are you sure that your media is good? Most cases of Windows install locking up is bad media.
