So I was putting my laptop on my desk today when the light hid the lid at a good angle, and I noticed that the outline of the rollcage has somehow formed on the lid of my t61 14". I don't have any idea why. Heat? Who knows. I take really good care of it, so nothing should be cosmetically wrong.

Anyway. I'll have some delayed pictures later this evening, but I thought I'd get this up and get discussion going.

You mean the lid is curved outward in the center? If so, I believe it is supposed to be like that.

No. I can see the outline of what the rollcage looks like ON the lid. It looks like it's worn. It's a lighter color.

I bet your laptop case puts pressure on the laptop.
Enough pressure that the plastic "skin" of the lid is being pressed against the rollcage, then in the gaps between the rollcage frame, the skin is able to flex a little away from the friction. So, as your laptop bag squeezes and rubs against the lid, the plastic right on top of where the rollcage pieces are gets rubbed harder, and you can see the added wear. The result is the outline you see of the rollcage, "worn" into the plastic.

Is your laptop bag tight, or do you carry the laptop in a backpack along with heavy books, or something?

This is all speculation but it is based on experience with simlar objects that have a plastic skin on a metal frame :)
