Anyone that actually proven/tested how tough this rollcage frame of recent ThinkPads are? By accident, of course. :)

like accidentally dropping them from a table or bed or warding off an attacker or something else...

Not entirely demonstrative of an accident, but cool nonetheless.

yeah i tested. dropped it on hardwood floor. everything was fine except the right hinge. it broke.

the left was intact and the computer was fully useage. nothing else was damaged. The unit was on during drop.

check out lenovoblogs, they have a video where they drive over one with a what looks like a dirt bike (motorcycle) and the unit turns on

I've read once in this forum though I can't seem to find it now, but it's about a thinkpad accidentally dropping on the floor of a restaurant, yet not even a scratch on the thinkpad. But that was an older thinkpad without a rollcage, I think.

Those kind of things. We all take care of our laptops but accidents happen. I am more interested in real-world experiences from forums users/thinkpad owners and not those captured in video, sometimes for marketing purpose. Those incidents when after the adrenaline rush of helplessly looking as your thinkpad fell on the ground, it's still working as if nothing happened and you said "It's good, it's a thinkpad!"

Well, that's no good. I can see why it would break. Securing metal to plastic isn't exactly the best thing to do.

A friend dropped his thinkpad on a hardwood floor and nothing happened, well almost nothing. There was a huge dent left on the floor where the corner of the laptop hit, but the thinkpad was as good as new.

I remember visiting ibm's thinkpad site many years ago and they had all these "testimonials" from people who damaged their laptops. You guys remember that? They encouraged people to send in the stories and pictures. One poor lad had a dump truck drive over his thinkpad, and of course the screen and casing was badly damaged but he was still able to recover the information on the fully usable hard drive. One thinkpad went through a house fire, but the hard drive was also recoverable even though the casing was all smoldered. I guess these things are not unbreakable, but if something happens in the end you only care about the data.

Wow! That is a very interesting story. Thanks for sharing. Were you there when it happened? Is it the more recent thinkpad with rollcage protection or the tanklike thinkpads of old?

I had a accident the other day with mine, was using it in the garden and my dog knocked it off the table and it hit the concrete. Not a sign of damage, did get a BSOD though.

I am never going to leave lenovo now <3

I drop my R50 a few times, on many different surfaces. It's still running, and mine doesn't have a roll-cage.

First off, one of those isn't even a Thinkpad...

Well, if you're looking for real life stories, I have one for you. I took my Thinkpad to the tennis courts for practice one day because I needed to finish some work. I was taking a break, sitting parallel to the net about 15 feet away form the baseline when suddenly, my friends who were continuing to play served a ball in my direction. I had the laptop in my lap, typing away, unaware that the ball being served was coming in my direction. The ball hit square in the center of the Thinkpad cover. The most amazing part of this was that the hinges resisted movement and actually kept the LCD in place. I credit the rollcage/Thinkpad cover for managing to keep the LCD cover intact. Now, as for how fast the ball was traveling when it hit my Thinkpad... My friend serves about 40-50 mph and accounting for the bounce, the velocity of the ball still would have been quite high when it hit my T61p. Also, no signs of physical scuff or damage on my Thinkpad.

The thing is, even though your Thinkpad is quite strong, never ever torture it on purpose.

Whoops, my apologies. I just checked the links again. I was watching a video of some guy kicking his laptop that clearly wasn't a Thinkpad last night. Maybe it was because of youtube doing maintenance.
