I ordered a T500 recently and am waiting patiently for it to arrive. I'm intrigued by all of the good reviews of Windows 7. To be honest, I still don't know a lot about what makes it better than previous versions; however, I did view the window snapping feature which would work wonders for me.

What do you think about running it as a primary OS for RC1? I'm a .NET developer so I would think those tools should be fine. I would like to try some games using Steam (TF2 and L4D).

    Must Work:
    -Visual Studio 2008
    -SQL Server 2008
    -Quickbooks

    Would be nice:
    -Steam Games

    What would you recommend?

    Go ahead.

Might as well try it before you get all your programs and files on the computer and all snugly with Vista.

Yup, that's definitely one way to look at it.

If you're planning on using switchable graphics it won't be very convenient, as Win7 doesn't yet support it. So to switch, you'll need to reboot and change in bios.

Okay, this is a good point. I don't think it's a deal breaker for me as I'm mostly hooked to power but good to know, thanks.

I almost always never run anything unfinished in production, but made an exception with Windows 7. I feel I got a bit burned by the beta, but the RC is more stable and consistent. I still wouldn’t recommend it for production use—on occasion, you’ll run into little things that don’t work 100 percent (or at all) and you might waste time trying to resolve an issue that might not be resolvable. However, if you’re open to making the sacrifices required to run “bleeding edge” technology, the productivity gains provided by Windows 7 might be worthwhile and offset the productivity losses inherent with running an unfinished product.
