If you lost 99 GB without installing anything, you need to send that HDD to hell in a handbasket.

I'm sorry I did not make it clear for you. My HD has only the software that comes with laptop (preinstall) including window Vista. I did not install any other software.

Rescue & Recovery may be making backups and storing them on your hard drive.

Rescue & Recovery is standard lenovo software and it eats up disk space.

What's the safest way to delete unwanted backups? (keep at least one, or keep 2 backups at any given time)

And what is the suggested backup approach, if running Vista Business?

I have a T60, with 120GB HD, and have about 20GB of data stored and 10GB of programs. The automatic backups quickly got me down to about 30GB of free space, but hasn't seemed to rob any more for a long time. How many versions of backups with the AutoBackup feature make if you don't stop it or run out of space?

    Here is what I do.

I use Vista's complete PC backup. It backs up the entire system onto highly compressed DVDs. This is not a system where you can go back and recover individual files, it's a system where you can recover entire disks.

My data is highly static and I keep it on other partitions and just back up my system disk.

Recovery comes by booting a Vista DVD, selecting Repair and it ask you your backup disks beginning with the last one first.

i am having a similar problem. I have a 75 gb drive. It says 40 is available. that means 35gb is being used.

I've acounted for about 15 gb by simply going into the Vista explorer and getting the size of every available folder on my drive. - 15gb

I've acounted for the 5gb hidden partion through "diskpart" and "list partition" - 5gb

I am still missing about 15 gb of space. I have NO backups that i can see through either of the backup programs (Vista and Lenovos). Lenovo's clearly states that no backups are available, and i double checked that i diabled it from day one.

any ideas? It's stable. i.e. i am not losing space daily or anything.

Is the 75 mb formatted or unformatted capacity?

Also, unless you have Windows Explorer set up right, it won't how a lot of files.

Run the Command window from c:\ and enter

    Dir/s *.* > Files.txt

Use notepad and open c:\files.txt and you will have a list a files.

You have paging, hibernation files, and restore points, the latter of which i turn off.

My T60 has had the same problem. Vista Business and Ultimate have something called "Shadow Copy" which as far as I can tell creates backups of certain files. To delete this bloat go into control panel and click on "System and Maintenance". Scroll to the bottom and under "Administrative Tools" click on Free up disk space. This will allow you to select which files you want to delete. Then click on the "More Options" tab and click Clean Up under System Restore and Shadow Copies. This freed up around 30 GB of storage on my HDD. There is currently no way to disable this feature so the only way to take care of this is to manually every so often.

An invaluable tool that I use at work on servers is this: jDiskReport It breaks it down by directory and whats actually eating it up. Pretty handy and it's freeware!.
