I was hoping that a CAD program I use (solidworks 2008) could run in 32-bit compatibility mode - I've been installing other 32-bit programs fine and they go to c:/program files (x86).
Anyone know of a way I can get solidworks 2008 to run? Or is my only option to format and install vista/xp 32-bit?

According to that, it should be supported, and "Suported as 64bits application since 2006 SP4.1 "
You couldn't get a solidworks 2008 x64 media?
EDIT: You need the SP3 -

wait...are there distributions specifically for 64-bit AND 32-bit?

There are separate versions for 32 and 64 bit. However, anything pre SP3.1 is XP64 only.
the only install that will run on Vista 64 is SW 2008 SP3.1 which is a Vista64 only upgrade. It is basically SW2008 + SP3.0 slipstreamed and adapted to Vista64.
It was released a few weeks ago and is avail for DL on the SW hompage. -
so you have the 32 bit and are trying to install it in 64bit vista?
