I was reading this article on Windows Server 2008 being faster and more stable than Vista SP1, and it got me thinking. Although I haven't received my T61 yet (UPS said later today), could Server 2008 theoretically work on the machine? Are drivers compatible?

This Microsoft techie introduced the idea apparently.

This is a purely theoretical exercise and if I ever have a free weekend in the near future I'll download the Server 2008 trial from Microsoft and try it. Granted, it probably does sound crazy though.

Yes it will work, just load the Vista drivers, some may not work.

But there are problems with running a windows server os.

Some VPN software will not work
Some regular software may not work ( i know there use to be a problem with the fingerprint software).
possibility of some driver not being available
Little to zero support installing this on a notebook.
Cost of the OS is a lot more. Example Vista X64 Ultimate is around 179 for the OEM. Server standard is around 699 for the OEM.
Is the cost worth the change. i would say no.
