I noticed that my HDD is runnung significant warmer than before. It's was about 36-37*C, and now, it would be 45* without any stress uses. I discovered that S.M.A.R.T is enabled, and it probably causes this.

    My two questions:
    - Is S.M.A.R.T enabled normal? Is your harddrive SMART enabled or not?
    - If it's abnormal, how can I disable/turn off SMART. I searched in BIOS but found no such option.

SMART should be enabled and no, its not causing higher temperatures.

Tested myself. On my desktop, enabling SMART makes temperature increased to 43*. Disabled it, and the temperature drops to 36-37*C. I couldn't find the option to disable SMART in BIOS, so I don't know with Thinkpad, SMART is enabled by default or not.

SMART runs occasionally self-tests when the hdd is otherwise idle, so you probably measured the temperature during one of these testing cycles.

As far as I see, SMART runs continuously background, now it keeps the HDD at least 40*C...

Leave S.M.A.R.T. enabled. However, do not poll HDD temperatures using a program/monitor. Doing this will cause the HDD to spin up everytime if it's not already.
