Hi all,
i know i will have a biased answer here but, hey i'm biased too..
I currently own an X41 and like it from the first day.
However its time to go for something a little smaller.
The specs on S10 and Asus Eee1000 looks similar,
Asus is current market leader and they have in stock.
However i like the ibm brand (eventhou its not ibm),
i'm sure it will be sturdier, durable and better keyboard than Asus,
but they do not have in stock, and don't know when it will be available.
Should i wait till xmas for ibm, curse and buy asus if they cant come up with production till then and hope it will be worth it as its not even reviewed here or buy Asus now as it is a tested machine and instant delivery?
Oh, do you think S10 might have a model with thinkpad..

No one!

I guess i'll give you some response since no ones responding. I think it really comes down to.. how long you want to wait for the S10 to be in stock, or which company you want to support more. Personally I love both companies, I have lots of Asus stuff including laptop, router, mobo, and vid card. I also have rescently ordered a X200 and my bro has a T61.
With regards to Service center, I had wonderful experience with Asus. They have replaced many things for free even after my warranty has passed... like wayyy passed the date. Lenovo/IBM... they are the best in the business world industry.. what more can you say? Dell's only popular in companies because they can't afford IBM's top notch grade.
Driver updates, i'm not sure which ones better .. so I'll leave this for others to talk about.
Asus eeepc basically made the netbook famous and has like one year more experience then everyone else?
So in summary:
what company you want to support more?
how long are you willing to wait?
what would be easier to get?
which one looks better in your opinion?
which specs you want more?
There's not much reviews or spec breakdown for me to give you a honest opinion, but i can say one thing... when I saw the S10.. my gut feeling/ initial attraction was to pick that over EEEPC. -
I am in the same situation. I am looking at the S10 due to previous experience with driver availability for my current workhorse, the G2S. Lenovo may have some of the same issues, but I have no experienced them yet
. Dell is also coming out with a small laptop, hopefully in the 10-12" category. I am nearly to the point where I will just buy the 1000H and get it tomorrow, instead of waiting for the S10 to come with a 6 Cell in 1-2 months. The MSI Wind is also another option. The options seem to be endless at this point.
-
quick and easy specs here
im not getting a new one until i can get the 6 cell S10. i like the aesthetics of the lenovo the best. the new asus N10 looks pretty sick, quite the small powerhouse. lenovo is really keeping customers in the dark on the S10's. im gonna wait either way but the 1000H is pretty sweet. -
Overall, the S10 seems to be better...price, looks and features. But as the post above, it really matters on how long you can wait because from the looks of it, the S10 may be difficult to get.
-
Thx guys i was almost loosing hope.
I guess i can wait till end of December for S10, but even that nothing is certain.
But cant get myself to pull the trigger on Asus.
Oh, and i know, as this was not enough, when S10 will be available, N10 will be on market too
****, i was so happy, for the first time i was going to be able to make an impulse buy.
As all configs are almost the same, prices are low and the fact that it wont be my primary, not even my secondary computer...
Look at me now... -

I recently bought an Asus Eee 1000H, and returned it a few days later. It was pretty nice, but it had a lot of keyboard flex, making the already small and cramped keyboard even harder to use. I had lots of repeated keystrokes to deal with. See my photos, video, and explanation here: http://picasaweb.google.com/pseudothink/AsusEee1000H
I eventually decided that the keyboard problems were likely a design flaw, and I'd be counting on luck to get one without them, so I returned it. The 1024x600 resolution display was also a bit too small for every-day use. It was totally functional and usable, even a nice display, but I wouldn't want to write a paper or edit a spreadsheet on it. I really did like the multi-touch scrolling on the touchpad, though, that was pretty nice. I absolutely hated the modified placement of the right shift key, though. That's the one I always use while typing, so not only had it been moved, but the "up" arrow key was in its spot now. This left me always hitting "up" whenever typing anything with capital letters. Trust me, it gets annoying REAL quick--having to stop typing, then remove any characters you accidentally typed on the wrong line, then move the cursor back down to the correct position. If I was going to keep it, I would have had to have remapped the up key to shift.
So given that IBM is known for having good keyboards, maybe that makes the S10 a more attractive option for you? -
I did not complained, accused anyone of anything, did not get angry and/or said something negative.
And you sir, someone who has clearly a great understanding of computers depending on your post counter, as a contribution to this thread, responded like that.
What have i done to get threated like that, did i make spam with posting two messages in a row? (20 posts in 3 years)
Too all the other posters who have written something to help, thank you, and if you have felt compelled to answer my thread because of my "no one, ;(" message, it was not intentional, sorry.... -
I too almost bought the 10" version of the Eee pc.
But then I heard about the Lenovo X200s - weigh much less than the Eee pc, has a usable full length keyboard, has a usable 12.1" screen, has a Core2duo CPU, dimentions are not much bigger than the Eee.
Only catch is the price but you get a real laptop here so it's worth it imo. -
the S will have the lower voltage CPU. I say X200 but that's just a super bios opinion from me.
-
When will the S10 be available?
-
Post count means nothing. I've seen many instances here where someone wih less than 10 posts helps someone greatly and others where people with 1000s of posts be complete asses. -
hopefully i helped someone with my 65 post.. i did get a rep lol.
On topic... in canada.. the whole ideapad line isn't even offered. Only way to get it is from other retailers like TigerDirect but i would avoid them like mad.. and they over charge... that U110... is around 2.3K CAN. For that, hello my sexy X200.
Honestly you won't get an accurate estimate of the S10 availability. Unless you are the select few that are in charge of the S10 in Lenovo and if they do release the information.. they probably just went against company policy and broke the confidentiality contract they signed.
Basically.. if you can't wait get the Asus, if you can wait, WAIT till Christmas.. don't buy in late sept/oct/nov/early dec. because once boxing hits.. till beginning of january you'll be sorry. Or maybe you wait long enough and realize you don't even need a netbook.. then you save yourself a couple hundred. -
I already have a 12" X41, even thou it started to show its age.
I'm not gonna replace it, if i was i will surely go for X200, but i want something more portable besides X41..
I guess Eee's are "too" entry level for me, so it looks like i'm going to wait for S10 and N10 releases, deliveries, reviews to make a decent comparison..
Thank you all who chimed in.. -
Hey why don't you try waiting for the X200s? It will be 2.47 lbs.. that's about as light as many of the netbooks out there, and gives you a lot more power
-
@ Fignutes: Thank you for that indepth look at the flex. I know most of the smaller laptops have it to some extent, but it seems that yours was pretty bad. I may break down one of these days after waiting for the S10 and get one, but I guess now I am warned. Did you contact Asus about it or just return quick?
-
It sucks that the S10 is not available direct from Lenovo Canada. This netbook is just dead gorgeous and the preliminary reviews are very positive. At the end of the day, I might get an N10. With Dell's own netbook coming out, prices will probably go down in the near future so it's not a bad idea to wait for the dust to settle down.
-
The Asus N10 does look nice, but I wonder what the screen resolution will be and the usual question of pricing. It does look very nice and while I will probably not use the HDMI feature, tis nice to have...
-
Got to be patient.
I barely caught your post.
I'd go with the Lenovo S10.
Be patient.
Or...
Take a look at ACER Aspire One over the Asus Eee.
I'd wait for the S10. -
Looks like i'm waiting for S10.
I'm dont want to mess my mind more with other brands like Acer or Dell, but i will have to deal with N10 since it looks like it will be available at the same time with S10..
Thank you all for advices and comments.. -
looks like the N10 is a netbook killer. also a wallet killer. if you can handle the size, this will compare to most integrated graphics laptops of any size.
boygenius:
- 10.2″ LED 1024×600 screen
- Windows Vista / Windows XP
- 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU
- NVIDIA GeForce Go 9300M GS 256MB graphics card
- 2GB RAM
- 250GB 5400rpm HD
- One ExpressCard slot
- One HDMI port
- Three USB 2.0 ports
- 1.3 megapixel webcam
- Fingerprint reader
- 3.5 lbs
-
for me the whole idea of a Netbook is to trade some performance against a light weight. At 3.5lbs the ASUS N series just doesn't do it anymore.
At 3.5 lb your into a whole other category in my opinion. -
I've been looking at the Ideapad S10, EEE PC 1000H and Thinkpad X200.
The S10 is the lightest at under 3 lbs. The 1000H and X200 are listed at around the same weight (3 - 3.5 lbs). Because of its size some people don't consider the 1000H a true netbook.
The S10 has an express card slot + 2 USB. The 1000H has 3 USB and no express card slot.
The 1000H has wireless N the S10 has G.
The 1000H has a 6cell the S10 a 3cell(?).
The 1000H is out now. The S10 who knows when it will ship? I hope by October, and that is just the lower capacity battery. I have not seen any information on when the 6 cell will be available. The S10 is not even available anymore on Lenovo's site.
The S10 and 1000H both have a 1024x600 resolution which is usable for short sessions or simple tasks, but you'll start wanting more for longer sessions or more complicated tasks. This is one of the reasons I'm considering the X200 as well.
The S10 and 1000H both have the right shift key to the right of the up arrow key. To me that's one of the worse keyboard design decisions I have ever seen for an English typist. This is another reason the X200 is good.
If they were both available and the S10 had a 6cell I would choose it over the 1000H. But, if I needed one now the 1000H is the only choice.
If you can wait I am sure there will be new netbooks soon like the Asus N series which more like a small notebook than a netbook. -

I just got 2 1000H units due to the massive price cut. Like $450 for the 80gb model with a 6 cell battery.
I do not think its big, but I guess it is supposed to be bigger than some of the other netbooks.
I was only comparing it to the MSI Wind at the time because the S10 was not announced yet, but if it would have been, I would have had a 3 way fight.
The EEE would have won tho due to price and battery. the 6 cell stock battery was super important to me as I never want to plug this into a wall, its all about charge & go for max portability and mobility.
The EEE is SOOO EASY to upgrade 2 screws and plop your 2gb stick of ram in there and a new HDD. So thats the first thing I did was put a 250gb drive in there and 2gb of ram.
Now that I own one I have gotten into the customize side of things, that bad keyboard design? Fixed, there are about 5 different programs that can change the key around so that the up arrow key can act as a shift key.
The way I do it currently is a program called autohotkey, and it actually lets me toggle on the fly between "arrow mode" and "shift mode" so I can use both.
The S10 fails to me only because of the 3 cell battery and its also more expensive im sure if/when 6 cell is out.
I also cant say for sure but I have heard almost no keyboard complaints about the 1000H but the S10 does have a few so maybe that keyboard is smaller (the chasis is smaller so I am almost postive it is since the 1000H uses the entire chasis)
The 1000H is very usable I can type almost full speed within the first 30 min of use (touch typing not pecking) -
@ ViciousXUSMC: Can you just install a 2GB stick of ram without going 1GB + 1GB, because I thought the total max was 2GB. Does it just use the 512MB + 1.5GB of the 2GB? ALSO, how did you fix the keyboard design? Did you shim it in some fashion to cut down on the flex? Thank you
-
Neither. Eee 1000 if I had to, but nobody has to do anything so you should not choose it. S10 from all reviews seen is tooooooooo hooooottttttttttt. Eee 1000 is great, but not really a netbook anymore considering its dimensions.
So you will get an MSI Wind. Not because everybody says it's the best. Because it is. Runs very cool, keyboard is fantastic (unlike S10). -

Everybody on EEEUser forums that needed to upgrade was getting this: $10.99 2gig so-dimm good brand after rebate from frys: http://shop2.frys.com/product/5442679
I think the sale just ended tho.
As for the keyboard, mine has no flex at all, but those that did have flex said it was very little and already found more than one way to fix it.
1.) Put some double sided tape under the keyboard back and it will hold onto the metal backplate = no flex
2.) Fold up some paper or aluminum foil to place at the areas where there was flex and that fixes it too.
The keyboard design, like I said above the only "flaw" is the right shift key being in a strange position, you get used to it fast, but if you dont want to have to get used to it, use one of the many methods tomake the up arrow act as a shift key so its right where it belongs.
Also I have stats now, the s10 has an 85% size keyboard and the EEE 1000H has a 92% keyboard, so yes it is bigger and easier to type on. -
Thank you for your help. I had no idea there was only one dimm...I have some fry's gcs so I will hit it up asap. Thanks again, gen
Edit: I looked at the rebate and it said 10/2, so I pulled the trigger. I hear more ram should help out on the battery life, minimally atleast due to the pagefile and such.
